Various facilities of the villages for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics are set to serve the athletes, coaches and officials for a total of 53 days at the three competition zones of Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou.
Located south of the National Olympic Sports Center, the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Village consists of 20 buildings spread over a construction area of about 330,000 square meters. It can accommodate 2,338 participants for the Olympics and 1,040 participants for the Paralympics, also offering catering and medical services.
Moreover, the Olympic Village facility in Zhangjiakou zone has been classified as Level 3, the highest level by the national Evaluation Standard for Green Building. It has 10 courtyards and 31 buildings with 1,668 apartments and 2,737 beds.
Meanwhile, the village facility in Yanqing competition zone has been undergoing various tests as well, and rightly so since a range of advanced technologies are being used in it.
Its main structure uses ultra-low power technology for a comfortable environment by maintaining the indoor temperature between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius and relative humidity between 30 and 60 percent. Besides, it also adopts passive house windows that have a lower heat transfer coefficient, perform better in thermal insulation, and consume less energy.

Not only this village is high-tech, but also nature friendly. During its construction, the surrounding natural environment was preserved to the maximum extent. In addition, by building sunken greenbelts, infiltration ditches and rainwater storage ponds, this village facility can treat rainwater and sewage for recycling.
At Wukesong Ice Sports Center, a robot is used for disinfection. By spraying atomized mist on the ground, it can sterilize an area of 36 square meters within just a minute.
It's about 1.4 meters tall, and the sensor inside can help it navigate around obstacles. It can store up to 16 liters of disinfectant, and its battery can last for four to five hours.
For smaller areas, an ultraviolet robot is used for disinfection, which is said to be more effective.
And another robot can undertake the work of three to four human volunteers. It can walk up to people who are not wearing masks and tell them to wear one and has a contactless hand disinfection device on its head.
Wukesong Ice Sports Center will host the ice-hockey competition next February. Organizers are also testing a closed-loop system that separates athletes and staff members from the media and spectators.
People inside the loop will sometimes need things like paper documents, personal gear and medical equipment. Robots will be utilized to get those things in without breaking the rules.
The "delivery robots" will be on standby in the buffer zone. In this area, staff members can put objects on the robots, which can carry up to 300 kilograms.
Besides the robots, smart lockers will supplement the delivery service. They function very much like the lockers in Chinese communities. The delivery person puts the package inside the locker. Then a code is sent to the receiver, who then picks it up from the other side.
The difference is that robots will deliver things immediately. So, anything urgent should go to delivery robots, while the locker can store things for longer.
But they have a shared objective: to minimize person-to-person contact as much as possible.
